This auction is for an enamel London Transport Bus Stop e plate for Route 172 Mon-Fri.
It is approximately 130mm x 125mm and weighs around 250g.
Route 172 was introduced in 1952 as a tram replacement route running daily between Forest Hill and Highgate via , Brockley, New Cross, Peckham, Camberwell, Elephant & Castle, Westminster Bridge, Victoria Embankment, Arundel Street, Aldwych, Kingsway, Bloomsbury, Rosebery Avenue, Islington, Upper Street, Highbury and Holloway Road. In 1957 the route was diverted at Westminster to run to West Norwood Station via Kennington, Brixton and Herne Hill. The Sunday service was withdrawn in 1964. In 1966 the Saturday service was extended in West Norwood to The Rosendale. In 1971 the service was rerouted between Islington Angel and Holloway Road via Barnsbury, and the Sunday service was reintroduced between Highgate and Bloomsbury. In 1974 the Saturday service was withdrawn between Westminster and West Norwood. In 1978 it was rerouted between Westminster and Strand via Trafalgar Square instead of Victoria Embankment. In 1982 the route was withdrawn north of Bloomsbury and rerouted to King's Cross Station. The 172 was finally withdrawn in 1985.
This plate will probably have come from the section of route between West Norwood and Westminster between 1974 and 1982.
It is in good condition with a couple of edge chips and minor surface marks as shown (see photo).
