This auction is for an enamel London Transport Bus Stop e plate for Route 109 Sunday in red.
It is approximately 130mm x 125mm and weighs around 250g.
Route 109 was introduced in 1951 as a tram replacement route running daily between Purley and Victoria Embankment via South Croydon, Brighton Road, West Croydon, Thornton Heath Pond, Norbury, Streatham, Streatham Hill, Brixton, Kennington, then both ways in a loop via Elephant & Castle, Blackfriars Road, Victoria Embankment and Westminster. In 1966 the Sunday service was withdrawn apart from a couple of early morning journeys. In 1978 a service on Sundays was introduced between South Croydon Garage and Brixton Station. This 'e' plate is likely to have come from a bus stop at one of the terminals on this day. Today the route runs daily between Croydon and Brixton Station.
It is in very good condition with minor surface marks as shown (see photo).
